OUGD406- Speaking From Experience

I am required to produce a graphic response that gives advice to next years design students. 

Concept

I intent to create a guide to procrastination using irony to suggest how to be good at it to highlight the things people do when procrastinating. I intent it to be informal and make the new students aware when they are distracted and act as deterrent to procrastination.  

Method of Delivery 


The format I want to display the content will be a poster that folds up in a challenging way to represent the idea of being distracted and procrastinating. I have chosen to create a poster because I think the new students could have it on their wall were they work to remind them of the un-productivity associated with procrastination and motivate them to keep focused.

Method of Production

I will create my poster digitally and in A2 scale. This will allow me to have more folds in the poster and i will be able to print double sided if needed. I want to design the poster in a minimal style using sans-serif fonts and a limited colour pallet of no more than three colours for maximum impact. I will print the poster with a matt finish on a light stock to allow me to fold the paper without it cracking.



After my crit on friday some good suggestions were made to how I could improve my project. This means I will need to further research methods of deliveries. It was suggested that I create a digital output to offer some productive means of procrastination such as links to design blogs and anything relevant to the course. This has made me think of creating a blog with design related topics to work alongside the printed material I am going to design.




Primary Research

I have conducted a survey online asking people what are the most common ways they procrastinate. The data collected will inform the content and the order. 






From the 29 responses to the survey the top 10 ways that people procrastinate in order are:

  1. Internet 
  2. Social Network
  3. Youtube
  4. Listening to music
  5. Making food
  6. Daydreaming
  7. T.V.
  8. Talking on the phone/ Texting
  9. Tea/Coffee Breaks
  10. Checking emails/ Cleaning

I found this and thought I could make a sketch book pack that encourages the students to draw more when they procrastinate. This is something I wish I had done a lot more of so I think it would useful.

I saw this image and thought I could design a to do list that wipes clean so it can be re-used to help students organise their time better.



I found these fridge magnets and thought I could design something similar with stickers relating to the course. For example, relating to colour theory or typography. This would brighten up their rooms and get them interacting to embed the information subconsciously.

Online Games For Graphic Designers 

I have found some geeky designer games that are really simple and fun to play but also improve and test your knowledge of graphic design. I think this would be a nice little feature to supply and hopefully encourage the 1st years to play relevant games instead of building a farm or poking people on Facebook :s

Another thing that was suggested in my crit was to look at self control. Its a program that allows you to block percific websites for a chosen period of time to deter procrastination. This is something else I could have on my blog to help students that have a deadline and really need to focus without any distractions.
