OUGD501- Ethics- What is Good? Lecture notes

Ken Garland
manifesto signed by a group of designers, advertisers.....of the time
produced in the boom of consumerism
felt frustrated that their talent was being wasted on pointless means
call for designers to do something more with talent
exploitation of creative talent
proposing a reversal of priorities

Replaced by this journal by adjusters
anti-capitilist
the tone changes to not just be about a waste of creative talent but becomes more critical and venomous

There saying designing's about working for the big companies

Subvert
they group graphic designers and advertisers etc together
its saying your making people buy stuff they don't need with money that they don't have
glamourising credit cards which locks them into a consumer system, in dept
global exploitation

you also affecting the way people interact with each other in a negative way

The tone becomes very judgmental and far to simplistic

saying that if you work to market, advertise, brand, companies in some way you are being un-ethical
Should use talents to stop capitalism and start revolution
use visual talent to show the evil of capitalism
culture jamming- high-jacking advertisements

easy to have ethics when you are comfortable with money
conflating advertising with capitalism

in favour of visual communication as politics

meme warfare- idea that skips through the popular consciousness
advertising construct these memes
replaces the system of capitalism with the dogma of anti-capitism
this could not be ethical in its own right

he made the same argument as the first things first manifesto
A cry for ethics

Conflating advertising with capitalism
he wants people to use their skills to do something more important

this idea came from a car company saying there going to leave bumpers how they are even though they are unsafe because they would cost more
he drove it into the senate building to test the bumper
his idea is people are ignoring design solutions for the sake of profit

he's saying designers tinker with the tip of the iceberg

saying there are more urgent things that need solving in the world

This generates social anarchy and breaks down society
no chance for debate

depends on the context

the society you live in will have some shared values

you have a religion and the scriptures. Determined by what god thinks is good/bad
based on dogma

he argued that we are distinguished from animal by instincts and reason because we think about our actions

example
if i am never going to give to charity if I'm well off
if no one gave to charity it would become redundant
the idea of charity is something we all rely on at some point in our lives

should not use other people to further your course

interested n the amount of good/bad pleasure/pain
based on the use of your actions
something is ethical if it increases total happiness

argument that if everyone did whatever they wanted it would be similar to nature
to be ethical is to think about the common good more than the individual gain

comes from logic and reasoning

Good reference point to design to

Papanek was really about design to benefit all
he was against designers from the 1st world going into 3rd world countries and becoming instant geniuses and not returning to help. In other words not giving them the solution the help themselves

tithe is something you give away for free, helps for the common good of society
saying designers can should devote 10% of your time to ethical courses
utilitarian idea to benefit the whole
