OUGD501- Seminar 4- The Gaze and the Media

We had a discussion about the previous lecture:

Certain features of women and representation of women can be traced back through history to today.

All the images of the women are naked.

Methods are used to make it comfortable for the viewer to look at the woman e.g. the mirror or their gaze is distant.

Men are the active ones while women are the passives ones, the objectified.

General tendency that women become objects which was acceptable and unchallenged until fairly recently.

JohnBerger 'Ways of seeing'

Acts as constant visible reminder of what women should look/be like in society. Gives you instructions of what your life should be and makes you dissatisfied of what you look like.

Naked V Nude

Naked is to be yourself
Nude is to be seen by others, objectification.

Subject V Object

Conventions of representation
